Thanks for the offer.
Pete did his bit and it's up and running again. Unfortunately everyone will have to re-register with the website if they want emailed forecasts.

David.
I think I'm too knackered to do a forecast now. Might do one in the morning, but I think I want to fly tomorrow (the good bits of today with less spreadout/showers?)

David, I was about to mail you to ask what was up. I can sort you out something here if you want -- how about a Wordpress blog of your own, e.g. glidemet.co.uk/lasham? Or I can make you a member of Glidemet and you can post your forecasts directly here.

(It's been a while since I last said this but I've always recommended that pilots read the all the forecasts available -- that's why I link to them in the sidebar -- like a kind of "human ensemble".)

Sorry, but LashamWeather forecasts are temporarily screwed:

The ISP had a catastrophic failure of the database server that holds the
LashamWeather users and forecasts. We have been waiting to see if they'd
be able to restore sensibly without it costing us lots of time - it looks
as if they can't.

So it needs some of brother Pete's time to get it back into a working
state. But he's busy trying to get ready to go to Italy for the club
class world's. So no promises. That might need people to re-register.

I've used it as an opportunity to have a rest - there's just been too
many soarable days :-)

If he can't find the time then I'll come up with an interim solution on
my website that I can administer and use while he is away. But I'm not
going to let it get in the way of my flying!

David.

Penrith Week (10th to 18th May) at Edensoaring's Skelling Farm site saw consistent light to moderate easterlies with inversions between 3000ft and 5000ft. Taake a look at Sandy Hawkyard's pictures (www.sandyprints>co.uk), you can see the most beautiful wave cloud which greeted us one morning. When the sun got going the situation changed and the flow became broken with tight rough thermals just upwind of the site and just downstream of the Cross fell slopes where the flow seemed quite smooth. The best model to describe this is the "hydraulic jump" effect where flow breaks down to create a thicker turbulent flow. Chris Riddell at Sutton Bank described this as occurring at Cross Fell , though at the time in my ignorance at the time I disputed it (sorry, Chris!). See "hydraulic jump induced waves" in Google, there is plenty written about it. David Mccarthy and Ian Ashton during Penrith Week both describe climbing to 9500ft upwind of the crest of the crest of the escarpment. The literature does mention that the hydraulic jump, effectively representing an obstructing "wall" can create a wave effect upstream, and perhaps this is what was happening.
Lots more to discover at Skelling.

Tha Lasham Advanced Met Courses were set up to offer an alternative advanced met course at very low cost, and from within the sport, in response to the disappointing offerings of the state met service.

£285+vat to trawl down to Exeter for a
"Met. for Gliders (2 days)" course.

"Met. for Gliders is designed to broaden and enhance the glider pilot's knowledge of aviation weather, particularly in relation to low-level route planning and safety."

If anyone would like to tell me how the "gliders" get out of their trailers, up the stairs and in to the classroom, and what "low-level route planning" has to do with cross country soaring I'd love to know, but I think it says it all about the Met Office's understanding of what we do. And closely followed by the CAA...

Alternatively you can come to Lasham for the weekend, have a good time, do a course set up by soaring pilots and delivered by a talented met professional with a sense of humour, and only pay £89 for the privilege....

http://www.lasham.org.uk/learning/met.asp

Over 120 satisfied pupils over three years so far.

Nice cam (lovely sunset as I'm looking at it), though it could probably benefit from being levelled :-) (and having less ground in the frame -- helps expose the sky better).

Aboyne used to have one of the sophisticated Met Office all-sky scanning cameras, but sadly those cameras are no-longer made (and thus no spare parts are available) and are being shut down 19 May.

Would double check this one - In the policy I have with my card they used to cover gliding then stopped but was able to get an add-on for £30. That ended last year and I am fairly sure that the current policy doesnt cover gliding. Still covers winter sports etc though.

Here is what we missed at our Latrigg expedition ...the rotor was directly over the launch site from the Friday to Monday and we could only launch late in the day. The Helm bar would have been easily and safely reached from our home site of Skelling farm (nr Penrith jctn 39 on the M6)

I wonder if the sat pics show it as well ?
The site for an early world altitude record from 1939 was only 2 nm SE from Skelling farm.
Edensoaring opens up from the 10th May, so if you see more east wind get in touch and if there are enough people we could launch in to the "Helm" (the first 9 days are quite busy with 25 gliders booked in). The site could be useful for the occasions when east winds spoil the soaring on the east coast. BGA turning point list 11a came out last week with lots of new and useful points in the Lakes and borders, thanks Ian and Tim.

Hmmm, that site was working last night but doesn't want to load at the moment. A shame, I'm always on the look out for good webcams... Take a look at this Google Map of webcams I put together. I try to keep it up to date but can't guarantee they all work all the time...

Just a reminder, there is an agreement for gliders to cross P18 below FL125 near Newcastle. The agreement has not made it on to the BGA web site along with the other dozen agreements yet but will do so very soon. This could be particularly useful for long flights and those visiting Edensoaring at Skelling farm. The agreement covers the famous Barnard Castle area that is renouned for good wave.

One of the members at Stratford GC pointed me to the Defford web site today site. Defford is marked on the 1/2 mill and is also known as Croft Farm. It is near the M5/M50 junction which is the Tewkesbury (TEW) BGA TP. Note that the strip is rather narrow for gliders (18M) and that they ask for a donation to a charity if you land there.

They run a webcam (WeatherJack's site labels it as Pershore). A particularly useful feature of this webcam is the ability to play a time-lapse movie of the day so far.

P J Hayman http://www.pjhayman.com do a sports insurance in various categories which _specifically_ includes gliding. You can do one-offs or yearly cover and there are options as to the level of cover. They have a scale of risk and gliding is actually in one of the lower groups.

I wanted something that had exactly what I wanted detailed in the fine print; there's no point hoping that you'll be covered if it isn't down there in black and white. I can't remember what it cost (I have the yearly worldwide version) but it seemed reasonable as it included the normal elements of travel insurance too...

My hubbie is insured through his AmEx card - that covers gliding, as well as scuba and off-piste skiing for all the family and it's included in the annual card fee. You also get to use the airline lounges whilst you're waiting for your flight to the USA :)

Hi,

I know this was talked to death on gliderpilot.net, but I can't go back and check the archives at the moment...

Can anyone recommend some travel insurance that will cover gliding activities? I'm planning to fly in the USA in a few weeks.

Thanks,
