Thursday

Tomorrow (Friday) is going to be quite good :-) . Unless you live in the southwest or west Wales that is, where the Weekend Low is going to start making itself known bringing cloud and, later, rain. But in the rest of England a slight ridge will cap things nicely, and cumulus will pop early, not long after 10am. Bases will reach 4,000 ft before noon in most areas south of Yorkshire (bases further north rather low and dense all day).

By mid-afternoon, the cumulus will have risen to over 5,000 ft in East Anglia and into the east Midlands, while in most other places east of the Bristol Channel they’ll be at 4,5-5,000 ft holding or going a little higher as the day progresses. Little bit of spreadout expected around North Wales—Wash and north, but not show-stopping and fine to the south. Late finish, as usual for the time of year—-thermals still going past 6pm but tending to blue out. (see note below)

Winds below 10 knots at all heights coming out of the southwest. There’s a slight risk of cirrus moving in from the southwest but it’s exactly that—-slight, even later in the day (edit Fri am: morning projections show some cirrus affecting areas south of the Thames Valley through the day, while the main area of cirrus will move in during the late afternoon shading much of the country by late afternoon). Don’t let that put you off; tomorrow should be an excellent day.

Saturday sees rain sweeping across the country; there might be a brighter and drier patch in the afternoon for south central England as one front departs before another arrives in the southwest. While it might be soarable it’ll be blustery though. Sunday looks rather wet with widespread heavy showers, and Monday doesn’t look a whole different. Next week picks up nicely from Wendesday on, for those who’re wondering/at comps next week.

Dawn-to-dusk piccies
As you probably gathered I was at Gransden Lodge on midsummer’s day, and we were lucky enough to see the sun peep through a gap in the clouds at dawn. A friend of mine, Kirsty McNaught, took some of these excellent pictures; others in the album were taken by Gransden member Gareth. I’d have taken a few pictures too but was driving retrieve 8-) .

Ooo, and don’t miss my comp calendar post below. There’s a link to it in the “Flying news” section on the left as well, so you can find it in future. Look out for more comp-related developments here in the near future. It’s all about the flying…

“A friend of mine, Kirsty McNaught, took these excellent pictures” … except for the ones taken by Gareth. Hers are the better ones though :-)
It was great to have you all visit, and glad you had a good time. Keep up the excelent forecast site.

Excellent day at Aston Down on Friday. It all ended at 6pm when the high cirrus arrived.

Thanks for you help with the met.
