Wednesday

Back | Home

The front currently over western England and Wales is forecast to get as far as central England tomorrow (Thursday) before stopping, or even moving back a little bit. That said cirrus is likely to be coming off the top and shading the rest of the country to some extent. Most likely outcome is cumulus to 4,000 ft with slightly weak climbs from the middle of England eastwards. Western parts cloudy with rain at times; wind virtually nil at surface and height.

Friday sees a front come east off the North Sea rather ruining things for the east; Wales and the west have the best chance of soaring though it may go showery. Some large discrepancies between models for the weekend; still a fair chance of being good especially Sunday.

Denbigh Gliding Club
Does anyone know what’s happening with them? Their website no longer loads and I heard that the site was for sale…

    You’ll find the following on Gliderpilot.net (http://adverts.gliderpilot.net/?op=s3&id=483)

    Airfield to let

Here’s a job and a half that will appeal to someone wanting to get stuck in.
LLeweni Parc airfield (80 acres with hangars and 900 metre runway) is maybe available to let, including adjacent 10 unit tourer caravan site.
Denbigh Gliding Club are presently in legal tenancy of the site but have given notice that they wish to quit.
The airfield will be attractive to a person (or organisation) wishing to exploit the extraordinary potential for Motor Glider operation and instruction, General aviation, Glider and light aircraft maintenance under the new EASA regimes, and the provision of a holiday environment utilising the caravan site. A Skylaunch winch is also available should the occupier wish to offer facilities to visiting (or perhaps resident) glider pilots.
    The sky is the limit!

Rubbish in Devon again yesterday.Very low cloudbase and spreadout to start, then was ok-ish for a couple of hours of local soaring before a mixture of sea air and high cloud ahead of the next front killed the day.

We (Wrekin GC) flew the last week of operations at Denbigh Gliding club in the first week of April. The club itself actually closed at the end of March.

We flew at Lasham yesterday and it was great. Cloudbase about 3500~4000ft. A couple of 500k and someone did 445k in a Ka6!

Paul, Terry, thanks for the info. So there’s no flying on the Denbigh ridge now? That’s a big shame, I never made it there myself but know people who have who raved about it. It was high on my list of sites to fly at.

Jo, nice to see you posting :-) . Glad Lasham was good, did you fly yourself?

  7. Jo Chow

Yes - I went local soaring and tried to get the GPS working in the Dart. I had to spin down (?!) because I wasn’t feeling well after an hour or so. Dave and other people were taking a micky of me because of this.

I love flying at Denbigh. The ridge is very good and the wave is brilliant! It’s such ashame that it’s close because of high rent!

In addition to my moan about the weather in Devon yesterday,I should also have added that I have flown at Denbigh every year for the last seven.I was there too for that last week with the guys from Cosford and East Sussex GC.The annual trip to Lleweni was one of the highlights every year for me and I am really sorry to see whats happened there - let’s hope something can be sorted.

Ah yes, I remember your flights on the ladder from that week (1 and 2), not least as flights from Denbigh were so rarely posted.

Crazy that one of the best soaring sites in the country is closed.

Mike, if you’ve come looking for your comment, I’ve moved it to Thursday.

Thursday’s forecast was a bit late coming out as I took so long preparing the 3D images, sorry!
